Her laugh broke the silence
like concrete snaps a bone-
sudden sparks of confusion,
a smudge of blinding denial,
the sandstorm of can’t be,
the absurdity of one moment’s
violent surprise when the next
moment turns around, all
cracked smiles and knives.
