What's Lost
There's a Rubik's Cube in Julia Child's kitchen
in the Smithsonian Museum. I understand
they reconstructed the kitchen exactly as they
found it. Down to the last detail, down to the
Rubik's cube to the left of the sink, unfinished,
so I wonder who's toy this was. A child's?
Certainly, a Child's, but a grandchild's? And
wouldn't they want it back? Wouldn't it be
maddening to come visit your grandmother's
kitchen, where she prepared those meals, those
wild, rich family meals, to see that kitchen
exactly as you remember it, to see the toy
you left on the counter as you rinsed an apple
or poured a glass of water, to see the place you
would return to, there, just behind the glass.
